Introduction:
Hi, I’m Buddy, a male Orange-Winged Amazon parrot. I am approximately 10 years old and fully feathered!
History/Background:
Buddy has had a difficult time recently, as his previous carer unfortunately passed away, so has come back to Problem Parrots through no fault of his own.
Current Condition:
Buddy is a stunning OWA with gorgeous colourful feathers.
Training:
Buddy needs time and patience to help him thrive. He can be cage territorial and has a strong bite, so it may be necessary to wear strong leather gloves when training him. He took a few weeks to settle with his safehouse, but with plenty of love and patience he is able to get used to his new surroundings. Buddy will need ongoing training to help him get used to hands and become less cage territorial.
Diet:
Previously on a diet of a mostly sunflower seed mix, Buddy has been successfully transitioned onto a varied diet of low sunflower seed mix (Countrywide VAM or Tidymix), pellets, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Buddy likes whole raw vegetables like sugar snap peas, chili peppers and broccoli. His favourite treat is popped popcorn (with no oil, salt, or flavourings, of course) which he gets while he is training and at bedtime for a treat.
Enrichment:
Buddy loves being talked to and responds back when people make a ‘tick-tock’ sound to him. He loves his cage toys, especially bells (which he rings to get attention!), and he has a soft toy attached to his cage which he uses to cover his food bowl sometimes. He sometimes takes a bath in his water bowl, but he loves a spray bottle shower!
Summary:
Buddy is a beautiful, engaging boy who would make a wonderful companion bird for an individual or a family with some experience in handling larger parrots. He would benefit from lots of out of cage time in a home with lots of space for him to stretch his wings. Buddy is a strong flyer who goes back to his cage on his own when he has had enough. He is only noisy first thing in the morning and at night, and has spent time in an aviary which he seemed to enjoy. He can talk, but he prefers to whisper rather than say words loudly, and he likes making clicking sounds, especially when people click back to him! He is okay with other birds but can get frustrated if they fly over his head or land on his cage, as he is quite territorial. He is a lovely bird overall and a pleasure to care for, but will need an experienced male carer who can help him thrive.
