George PP653

George PP653

Species: Mealy Amazon
Name: George
Adoption Fee: £300

Location: Wigan
Cage Supplied: No, I’ll need a new one please.

Introduction:

Hi, I’m George and I’m a very pretty, easy going and vocal Mealy Amazon. As you may know, I am one of the largest Amazon species, so be prepared! I am a big chap! I’m definitely a boy as this was confirmed with a DNA test.

History/Background:

I was adopted from Problem Parrots about 5 years ago, and was very much loved and cared for. Sadly I had to return to the charity as my adoptive parents could no longer look after me. I am now in my temporary new home (safehouse) and settled in quite well. There are lots of other birds, but they do not bother me at all, as I was used to living with other birds in my previous home.

Training:

It seems I will need to catch up on some training. I don’t like to step up, but my safehouse mum says it will only be a matter of patience and time for me to do so.

I like to spend time out of my cage, I will fly around (not very elegantly I’m afraid!) and I’ll have a walk around the floor to keep me fit. I’m also happy in my cage and will easily go back in especially if food is offered.

Diet:

In my previous home I was on a low sunflower seed mix, but now I enjoy Harrisons pellets. You will soon find out that I love my food and if you cant find me, I am at my food bowl. My favourite veg is sweet red peppers and favourite fruit is apple. I also like grapes and pomegranate seeds. I prefer them in large chunks rather than in a mix.

Obviously I like nuts, mostly walnuts, but also pistachios and cashew nuts. Beaware that I’m quite chunky (according to the vets) so nuts are always in moderation!

Enrichment:

Even though I have a big beak, I am not a chewer of toys. I have a few small wood and cardboard toys that I will shred but I’m not in favour of the big chunks of wood.

Summary:

George is a lovely, sweet natured Amazon and will make someone very happy. He adores a good head scratch. George also loves a shower, which he needs to keep his radiant feathers in pristine condition.

As George is not a big chewer, his beak needs to be monitored and may need a trim from time to time. He also needs regular nail trims. His grip around perches is not very tight and as a result occasionally has been falling from his perch. Though then he happily makes his way back up the bars.

George likes both men and women, though there is a slight preference towards men. He is not bothered by the presence of dogs around his cage, obviously only when he is safely tucked away inside his cage.

George is very vocal and can chat along in his own hilarious language. In addition and very important to keep in mind, is that George can be extremely LOUD, he is a big Amazon after all!
